Commercial Gas Dryer Ignition Sequence & Thermal Limit Diagnostics

When a commercial gas dryer tumbles but fails to produce heat, facility managers often lose hundreds of dollars in operational efficiency. Troubleshooting commercial gas equipment requires strict adherence to safety protocols and a deep understanding of the ignition sequence of operation.

The 4-Step Ignition Sequence

At A/C Dr. Naz, we track the electrical path step-by-step:

  1. Thermostat Call: The control board or operating thermostat calls for heat.
  2. Igniter Warm-Up: Voltage is sent to the Hot Surface Igniter (HSI) or spark module.
  3. Flame Sensor Verification: The radiant sensor detects the heat from the HSI. Once the required temperature is reached, the sensor opens, dropping voltage to the igniter and redirecting it to the gas valve coils.
  4. Gas Valve Opens: The solenoids open the valve, releasing gas over the fading igniter to create the burner flame.

Diagnosing Thermal Overloads

If a commercial dryer is short-cycling on heat, the issue is rarely the gas valve. Usually, restricted airflow (blocked facility exhaust vents or lint screens) causes the high-limit thermostat to trip. We measure exhaust temperature and airflow velocity to ensure the system is operating within spec before replacing any sensors.

Why is my commercial gas dryer glowing but not heating?

If the hot surface igniter glows but no flame ignites, the sequence of operation is halting at the gas valve. This is typically caused by a faulty flame radiant sensor that fails to open, or defective gas valve solenoid coils that have lost continuity.
