A commercial microwave can run while the food stays cold. The light, the fan, and the turntable still work, and the heating circuit does not. On a commercial unit, that usually comes down to a worn door interlock or a failed part on the high-voltage side: the magnetron, the diode, or the capacitor. Leave the cover on. That circuit is technician work.
What can the kitchen check?
Use a microwave-safe cup of water. Run it on high for about a minute. If the water stays cold, the unit is not producing useful heat.

- Confirm the power level is on high. A low setting heats slowly and can look like a dead oven.
- Confirm the door closes flush and the latch catches.
- Clear anything sitting in the latch.
- Run the test with water in the cavity. An empty cavity is hard on the unit.
Unplug the microwave, wait, plug it back in, and run the water test once more. If the water is still cold, stop.
What does the door have to do with heat?
A commercial door takes a lot of cycles in a service. Interlock switches let the heating circuit close only when the door is shut. A worn switch, or a latch that does not sit fully closed, can leave the fan and light running while the heat circuit stays open. The kitchen check is the latch and how the door sits. The switch test belongs to the technician.
Why does the cover stay on?
The high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge after the cord is pulled. Opening the cabinet to inspect the magnetron, diode, or capacitor is how people get hurt. If the unit sparks, buzzes loudly, or smells like burning, unplug it and leave it off until someone qualified is there.
When does another repair stop making sense?
Ask for the service history on that serial number. A unit that has already had repeat failures in the heating circuit is a replacement conversation. We will say so after we see the model and what failed. The price comes after that look, from the failed part.
What should you have ready when you call?
- The model and serial number from the data plate
- What still works: light, fan, turntable, display
- Whether the food stays cold, heats slowly, sparks, or smells hot
- How long the unit has been on the line, if you know
A high-speed oven is a different machine. See Turbochef oven repair. For the rest of the hot line, see commercial kitchen appliance repair.

FAQ
Why does a commercial microwave run but not heat?
The light, fan, and turntable can run while the heating circuit does not. A door interlock or a high-voltage part — the magnetron, diode, or capacitor — is the usual finding.
Can the kitchen open the cover?
Leave the cover on. The capacitor can stay charged after the unit is unplugged.
What should we try first?
A cup of water on high, a door that latches, and one power reset. If the water stays cold, call (425) 535-8990.
Is a speed oven the same repair?
A high-speed oven such as a Turbochef is a different appliance. Use the Turbochef page for that unit.
