- Refrigerant hiss, oil stain, or suspected leak — EPA-certified technicians only; do not add refrigerant or braze lines yourself.
- Repeated compressor short cycling or breaker trips — one reset is not a fix; continued operation can damage the compressor.
- Sparking, burning smell, or exposed live conductors — shut off at a labeled disconnect if safe to reach; call a licensed technician.

Reach-In & Prep Table Not Cooling
Direct answer: A warm reach-in or prep table on the line usually traces to airflow, gasket leaks, condenser airflow, or control faults — not always low refrigerant. Line equipment runs in hot ambient air; a dirty condenser or propped lid can push temps out of spec within one service period.
Walk-in cooler and freezer problems use different guides — see walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer icing. Service: commercial refrigeration repair.
Safe checks before you call
Work through these in order. Stop at any red condition above.
- Safe check Confirm lids and doors close fully and gaskets seal along the pan rail. Propped lids during prep are a common cause of warm product on busy lines.
- Safe check Verify the controller setpoint matches your food-holding requirements and the display matches a probe thermometer in the cabinet.
- Safe check Check that pans are not blocking internal evaporator airflow — overfilled rails restrict circulation.
- Caution From the floor, look for dust or grease on the condenser grille if accessible without opening panels. Line heat and grease accelerate condenser fouling.
- Caution — once only One power cycle may clear a nuisance control lockout — if the unit does not pull down within 30 minutes, stop and schedule service.
Likely causes (what we diagnose on site)
When safe checks do not restore operation, we follow sequence of operation before replacing parts:
Gaskets and line heat — Worn lid gaskets and hold-open time during service let warm kitchen air into a small cabinet fast.
Condenser and airflow — Condenser fans, coil cleanliness, and clearance — especially on units tucked under counters near fryers.
Controls and refrigeration — Thermostats, probes, cap tube restrictions, and charge issues after the above are ruled out.
When to call a technician
Call if product is out of safe holding range during service, the unit will not pull down after safe checks, or you hear refrigerant hiss. Same-day diagnostics when capacity allows.
