Diagnosing Commercial AC Compressor and Contactor Failures

A “Dead Compressor” is often the symptom, not the cause. At A/C Dr. Naz, my EPA Section 608 Universal Certification means I prioritize root-cause analysis before recommending a replacement.

3-Phase Contactor and Capacitor Integrity

In commercial air conditioning, the contactor is the “Heartbeat” of the system. We inspect for pitted points that cause “Single-Phasing,” which can burn out a 3-phase compressor in minutes. We also perform a capacitor drift test; even a 10% drop in microfarads can cause excessive heat in the start windings. If a compressor has failed, we follow the 500-micron vacuum standard during the repair to ensure moisture and acid are fully removed from the system.

H3: Why does my commercial AC unit hum but not start?

A loud humming usually indicates a seized compressor or a failed start capacitor. In 3-phase systems, it often means the contactor has dropped a phase, preventing the motor from reaching the necessary torque to spin.
